2020 and COVID-19

I realized today that I haven't much documented how COVID-19 has effected us, and years from now, I'll likely look back and be disappointed that I didn't document this time more.

Initially, the beginning of outbreaks in the US and closures was alarming.  People were flocking to the grocery store and clearing it out.  Calls for isolating at home and school closures was rather alarming.

I was reading the updates on the news several times a day, and it did get to me.  I had to decide to read a little bit each morning, and then let it be, or I would go crazy.

Thank you to Lina for these amazing masks!

The last three months of school for us were at home in virtual learning and Scott working from home.  We spent these weeks, essentially completely isolated from others.  The only time we left the house was to hike, bike, and for me to go to the grocery store.

It was actually refreshing at first in some ways.  No driving.  No rushing.  Sleeping in.  Time to finally do the family things we always wanted: board games, puzzles, reading, sorting and cleaning out, etc.

It was exhausting in other ways.  Kids were home 24/7, which meant no one else to discipline our kids, get them to learn, do chores, & clean up.

Being isolated from friends was harder than I thought it would be.  I need to talk to a friend at least once a week!

Feeding 6 people 3 meals a day was actually exciting for me at first.  I could finally cook for my family exactly the way I wanted.  I made super healthy and filling meals 3 times a day. I was able to use up all the expiring food in the pantry and all the fresh food in the fridge totally before heading to the store every 8-10 days.   No food waste, lots of healthy food, no eating out....ideal in some ways.   Except that after 3 months of this, I was exhausted.

I decided my original goal of not eating out EVER until the virus was under control was not very practical, and we started going to the beach occasionally, and picking up Wendy's on the way home.  Or, after particularly long days working on house projects, picking up Dominos.

I have always been grateful for school lunch.  One meal each day that I don't have to prepare a hot meal for my kids.  However, I will be even MORE grateful for school lunch after this.

One of the best things was getting our e-bike.  It gave us all something fun to do right from home.  It was a way for the boys to explore the neighborhood and gave them some freedom they hadn't had before, while still following social distancing rules.  We enjoy it very very much!

Even after school ended, we have continued to social distance very well through the summer.  Our boys have only had a handful of meetups with friends at the beach or outside.  Cora just started meeting up with a friend for a once a week playdate with a family who has also been super-cautious like we have.

I have met up with only a handful of my friends as well, in outside safe environments.  I taught yoga virtually once each week.  When the studios were allowed to re-open, I decided to teach in person only if it were outside or in a small class (4 participants) only with a room with doors wide open, 6+ feet apart.   That has felt very safe to me.

The most "risky" thing we did was to host Scott and kids, touring Martha's Vinyard, Boston, and the area a bit....all outdoors.....all social distancing with lots of hand sanitizer and masked....also very low risk type of travel in my opinion.   Having that one vacation in the middle of this isloation time was so so good for my moral.

Then, in September (a month from now), we will send all 4 of the kids to school for some hours in the week.....and hope that we all stay healthy. 😕

It feels a little like it might go like this.....but I hope not! (My favorite Gif)

After 6 months of social distancing, it will feel really weird.  However, continuing to virtually learn would feel really stagnant too.  Just no way around it.   2020 has been very very exceptional.

Some of the popular news at this moment along with the virus: Protesting due to the death of George Floyd and others, Black Lives Matter, some violence/unrest with that, a lot of talk about the presidential election (Trump vs. Biden) this year, lots of school board meetings trying to decide how to start school, labs all over the world trying to produce an effective coronavirus vaccine, resurgence of anti-vaccine talk along with that, and a lot of news on sex trafficking and related scandals.

                                Health Politics & Covid-19 = Happiness?

Some of the silver linings in all this has been that we have had a lot of time together as a family. My kids have been playing creatively and well together. I feel like they had to warm up to that at first, and now it's going really well.   There were many forts made during these months.

We really enjoyed taking time to slow down from the hectic pace of life.

Though ready for more "action" now, I do feel that we will appreciate the normal activities more as they begin again.

We still have a good 6-12 months before I think things will start really getting back to normal, but just wanted to document a little bit of the journey.

Backpacking to Franconian Falls

We made our first attempt to backpack with all 6 of us!  It was a success!

With it being our first time with all of us, and seeing that we don't know a ton about the area here and whether there would be room (especially with the wilderness areas being busier due to COVID), we were nervous that we might get 2.6 miles in to the campground and not have a spot open.  As it turned out, we were the first to the campground and had our pick of sites.

This spot in the river had spots so deep that it was about 5 feet deeper than Scott could touch.
The kids made a little pool to collect polywogs, and collected about 10 of them.

Lower Franconian Falls

With lots of safety warnings posted, we were very careful, but I decided to try this waterslide with Aaron.  Very turbulent in the water, but a fun little slide.

The campsite was nice.  They had a bear box requirement, and a lot of bear activity in the campground the night before we camped, but luckily, nothing the night we stayed over.  Cora said they had the "nicest port-a-potties ever!"

Now that we have done it once, we hope to go again soon!  2.5 miles in was a good distance.  More would certainly have been a challenge for a 3 year old.  Maybe we can go up a mile each year he ages.

Ollie-ism

Yesterday, Ollie and I were laying on the couch, he asked "What's inside my chest?"

 - "Your heart and lungs."

"Can you listen to my hawt?"

Listening......- "Yes, I can hear it."

"What does it say?"

It says "Bum-bum, bum-bum"

After he listened to my heart, he said.  "If I had a window in my chest, you could see my hawt."

House Projects and Summertime exploring

Scott tackled some major house projects so far this summer.  I love when he does, but then, it's always accompanied by guilt that he's behind in his work projects.   He needs a clone.
(He installed 2 Condensors and 5 Air Handlers in the house.  It was a big deal!)

I feel so good when I take the kids out to do something fun, but then, I get home and feel overwhelmed by the chores not done at home, the car cleanup from the outing, the laundry.....forget about putting the kids to bed.  I need a clone.

Wouldn't it be lovely?  You could clean all day with no kids to interrupt, then switch with your clone the next day and take the kids to do fun things, coming home to dinner and a clean home.  That's my dream.

But, the next best thing would be having the kids go to school but not get COVID.  That's what we are hoping for right now.

Enough dreaming, here's some pics of when we did manage to get out and see some fun new things:

Beaver Brook State Park

Lake Massabesic (a water shed - no swimming, but a nice walk)

The COVID-19 social distancing has been taking it's toll some days the past few weeks, so I did get to have some nice talks with friends I haven't talked to in a while virtually, on phone and two in person.  It was wonderful to catch up with friends I hadn't seen in months and others I hadn't talked to in a year or more.

Allowed Cora to have a playdate with a friend who had also been social distancing, after months of not having any.  It was refreshing.  She LOVED it!

Swimming a the Swimmin' Hole has been a great way to spend summertime.

This was a fun adventure day.  I took the kids to PLUM ISLAND.  The state park parking lot was fun, so we didn't get to see the very end of the island, but we found a great observation tower and beautiful beach.

Coming home to a toddler wearing his pajama pants, sisters shirt and a super-hero mask
while watching TV is the cutest! 😂

In Boston last month, an ice cream shop had waffle cones "dipped" in different delicious rice crispies and other cereals.  I tried to home make 2 kinds so far.  Rice Krispees and & Fruity Pebble Krispees.

The kids were soooo excited.  Ollie kept saying "Is that my one?!"  Yes, this is yours.  "Is that my one?"  Yes, this is yours, just let me finish scooping.   "Is that my one????"
He couldn't stop asking from excitement.

Now, Aaron and I like to quote him when we are excited.  "Is that my one???"

A blanket fort is a popular way the kids spend their time in social distancing.

The studio in town where I have taught yoga for the last two years just got an in-town award for being the best yoga studio. That was cool. :)
